Core Mechanics

Understanding Hell Clock’s core systems is vital for success. This page breaks down the most important mechanics.

The timer is the heart of the game. It constantly counts down, forcing you to play aggressively. The run ends if it reaches zero. Time can be added by killing enemies and completing objectives. The timer is paused during boss fights and can be disabled entirely in Relaxed Mode.

Killing enemies rewards you in two primary ways during a run:

  • Experience Bar: Fills up to grant temporary, run-specific buffs.
  • Relics & Loot: Powerful items with unique effects (e.g., boosting fire damage, causing explosions). Combining relics is key to creating powerful builds.

Between each run (descent), you return to a safe hub area. Here, you can achieve permanent progression:

  • Spend Resources: Use Gold and Blessings gathered from your last run.
  • Upgrade Gear: Improve your weapons and armor.
  • Unlock Abilities: Purchase permanent new skills for Pajeú.
  • Complete Quests: Undertake tasks like “reducing lost souls” to earn new items and perks.

The game is structured around a three-act story campaign. Each act contains multiple dungeon floors and a final boss. After completing the campaign, you unlock:

  • Endgame Ascension Mode: A harder mode with custom challenges.
  • Penances: Modifiers you can apply to make runs more difficult for greater rewards.
  • Heavenly Promises: Special objectives that grant powerful Constellation rewards.
